Beyond Reception applies a new concept for analyzing cultural change, ‘transformation’, to the study of Renaissance humanism. The new theory stresses the active role played by the later culture in receiving and interpreting the classical past, with essays applying this methodology to Renaissance grammar, rhetoric, history, poetry, and philosophy.
