This book investigates the interactions between overarching narrative emplotment and the one-by-one connections of events in literary, historical and phenomenological narratives. Drawing on a wide range of authors including Aristotle, Gottsched, Kant, Ranke, Heidegger, Arendt and Koselleck, Feldman articulates the tension between the constraints of plot structure and the representation of freedom and contingency.
